At least 259 LGBTQI+ people were held in UK immigration detention last year, facing homophobic bullying, harassment and abuse.

We're working with Joel Mordi, a Nigerian LGBTQI+ activist who was detained after seeking safety in the UK, to raise awareness of the dangers LGBTQI+ people face in UK immigration detention.

The Home Office has committed to review its detention policies in the coming months. This is the new government's opportunity to end the detention of all LGBTQI+ people.

I was shocked to read in Metro recently that at least 259 LGBTQI+ people were held in immigration detention last year, despite evidence that they face harassment and abuse inside. That's twice as many as were recorded the year before in 2022.

Rainbow Migration are holding a drop-in for MPs on Tuesday 12th November, where you can learn more about the dangers that LGBTQI+ people face in detention and how you can help by influencing the government's ongoing review of its Adults at Risk In Immigration Detention policy.

As your constituent I'm asking you to please attend this event and do what you can to help on this often overlooked issue.

If you attend, you'll have the chance to hear from and speak to Joel Mordi, a Nigerian LGBTQI+ activist who sought safety in the UK but was detained in Harmondsworth. His experience highlights the very real dangers faced by LGBTQI+ people in detention centres - bullying, abuse, a lack of protection from staff and long-lasting mental health implications.
