Help us keep LGBTQI+ detention on the agenda.

As we celebrate LGBT+ History Month it's vital that we don't lose sight of the injustices our community still face in the UK today.

LGBTQI+ people seeking safety here can still be locked up indefinitely in immigration detention, where they are subjected to bullying, harassment and abuse. It's a harrowing experience that can have long-term consequences for their mental health.

Let's make sure they aren't forgotten this LGBT+ History Month. Send a letter to the editor of your local paper today.

Letter writing top tips:

We have suggested some wording to get you started on the next page, but it's really important that you edit it - editors will not publish template letters. To stand the best chance of publication, your letter needs to be:

  • Short - ideally less than 200 words.
  • Personalised - say why you care, e.g. because you're LGBTQI+, have been through the asylum system, have been affected by detention or work with people who have.
  • Assertive but polite.

If you can link it to your local community (e.g. if you live in a City/Borough of Sanctuary, or near a detention centre) that's an added bonus. If you mention your local MP by name (e.g. "What is our local MP, XXX XXX, doing to tackle this issue?") they will see it through their media monitoring.
